HVAC energy and operating-cost calculators
Work out what heating and cooling equipment costs to run, compare fuels, and estimate what a higher-efficiency system would save.
AC Electricity Cost Calculator
Estimate what an air conditioner costs to run per hour, day, month and cooling season from its capacity and SEER2 rating, or from its measured power draw.
Answers: How much does it cost to run my air conditioner?
SEER2 Energy Savings Calculator
Estimate annual cooling energy and cost savings from upgrading to a higher SEER2 air conditioner or heat pump, with simple payback.
Answers: How much will a higher SEER2 air conditioner save me?
Heating Cost Calculator
Compare the cost of delivered heat from natural gas, propane, heating oil, electric resistance and a heat pump, per million BTU and per year.
Answers: Which is cheaper to heat with: gas, propane, oil, electric or a heat pump?
Rated efficiency versus real bills
SEER2, EER2, HSPF2 and AFUE are measured under standard test conditions so that products can be compared fairly. A real installation can do better or worse depending on airflow, refrigerant charge, duct leakage, thermostat settings and weather. Every calculator here lets you enter your own prices and run hours, and says plainly which figures are rated and which are estimated.
Default prices
Default electricity, natural gas, propane and heating-oil prices are U.S. residential averages from the Energy Information Administration, with the month they describe noted beside each field. They are starting points: local prices often differ by a factor of two, so use your own bill for decisions.
