Line Set Charge Adjustment Calculator

Work out how much refrigerant to add — or recover — when the installed line set is longer or shorter than the length the factory charge covers.

Method reviewed October 25, 2026. Version 1.0.0. How it works

Your inputs

Unit system

From the outdoor unit’s installation manual (often 15 or 25 ft).

Ounces per foot for your liquid line size, from the installation manual.

Ounces per foot; enter 0 if the manual gives one combined rate.

Result

Refrigerant to add
16.35oz
In pounds
1.022lb

Add about 16.35 oz (1.02 lb) for 25 ft of extra line set.

  • The equipment manufacturer’s installation manual takes precedence: it gives the included length, the rate for each line size, maximum lengths and any long-line accessories. Confirm the final charge with superheat or subcooling as the manufacturer specifies.
Length beyond the included length
25ft
Show the working
  1. Length difference = installed − included
    40 − 15 = 25 ft
  2. Adjustment = difference × (liquid + vapor oz/ft)
    25 × (0.54 + 0.114) = 16.35 oz

How the adjustment works

Split-system outdoor units ship with enough refrigerant for the unit, a matched indoor coil and a stated length of line set, often 15 feet. For every foot beyond that, the installation manual gives an amount to add per foot of liquid line (and for some systems the suction line too), which depends on the line sizes and the refrigerant.

Charge adjustment = (installed length − included length) × the rate for each line. A negative result means the line set is shorter than the included length; some manufacturers ask you to remove charge, others do not.

The manual comes first

Enter the rates from the equipment’s installation manual, not a generic table. Manuals also set maximum lengths and height differences, and some require accessories or a different method for long line sets. After weighing in the adjustment, confirm the charge with superheat or subcooling as the manufacturer specifies.

In the U.S., handling refrigerant requires EPA Section 608 certification.

Worked example

These are the example values the calculator opens with, and the result the engine calculates for them.

Inputs

Line length covered by the factory charge
15 ft
Installed line length
40 ft
Liquid line charge rate
0.54
Vapor (suction) line charge rate
0.114

Result

Refrigerant to add
16.35 oz
In pounds
1.022 lb
Length beyond the included length
25 ft

Add about 16.35 oz (1.02 lb) for 25 ft of extra line set.

Assumptions

  • Charge adjustment = (installed length − length included in the factory charge) × charge per foot of each line, as manufacturers’ installation manuals specify.

Limitations

  • Charge rates depend on the refrigerant, line size and the manufacturer’s assumptions; never use a generic rate in place of the manual’s.
  • Refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certification in the U.S.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces of refrigerant per foot of line set?

It depends on the line sizes, the refrigerant and the manufacturer. For a 3/8-inch liquid line, R-410A manuals commonly list around half an ounce per foot, but always use the figure in your unit’s manual.

Do I count the suction line?

Only if the manual includes it. Most residential charts give a single rate based on the liquid line, because nearly all the refrigerant in the line set is in the liquid line.

What is the total weight method?

Weighing in the full charge — factory charge plus the line-set adjustment — into an evacuated system, rather than adding refrigerant until gauges look right. This calculator gives the line-set part.
